February 5-9th 100th Day of School, Global Play Day

Hello,

It was so fun to see so many of my students (past and present) at the Shakey Storytime event! A huge thank you to our amazing PTA for organizing and the hot cocoa/coloring packets!

We are going to have a super fun week in room 103! We have completed our theme on bears and the students should have brought their bear reports home on Friday. We will begin a 2 week theme of kindness and Valentine's Day but also integrate our 100th day on Tuesday. Please note that Wednesday will also be a PJ DAY to celebrate filling our heart jar!

This week the children will:

Language Arts-

  • learn a new trick word- you
  • practice CVC words (reading, writing and making real and nonsense words)
  • write about something they have learned in the 100 days of kindergarten
  • share a book they are working on in Writer's Workshop (big share day coming up!)
  • practice ABC order
  • practice discriminating between those tricky vowels!
  • write about kindness and show with pictures what it looks like
Math-
  • count to 100 a LOT!
  • skip count by 10s
  • solve word problems (both add/sub) through 10 in many different ways
  • sequence numbers 0-20
  • show number quantities using 10 frames and Valentine jewels
Imagatorium-
We will have our 3rd and final lesson and explore and build with the material of wood.

Second Step-
We will take a break from the formal lessons of Second Step for the next 2 weeks and focus on a few past lessons that I feel the students need to hear again. We will also be doing a lesson on what kindness looks like and does not look like. We will also discuss respect and what that looks and feels like in school, especially. Here are a few read aloud stories if you are interested in watching with your child.

Here are some important things to know!

The 100th day of school: Feb. 6th is the 100th day of school and we will be celebrating with lots of fun activities that day.  The children are encouraged to bring in 100 of something to share with the class (like a show and tell).  This could be a collection (buttons, rocks, beads, Legos, ANYTHING!) or they could wear 100 on them (100 cheerios on a necklace, 100 smiley faces on a t- shirt, or just the number 100 on a hat etc).  This should not be a stressful thing! I will read a book as we get closer about the 100th day of school coming up, which has lots of ideas and we will discuss some ideas together. I have begun to talk about it with the class so they may be aware of the expectation.  We will also have a special snack on this day but please do send in a regular snack for your child as well!

Global Play Day: Is on Feb 7th. HERE is a lot of information on what this day is exactly! So, the students are encouraged to bring in collaborative toys, games etc to share and play with their friends. I am asking that there be NO electronic/noisy games or toys. I appreciate it! Some fun things to bring in could be a large sheet/blanket to make a fort, craft materials, board games, card games, etc.. The whole school will be participating in this day of play!
PJ DAY!!!- we will also have PJ day on 2/7 to celebrate filling our heart jar!

Thursday 2/8- we will have a school presentation about the power of a positive mindset! Here is a quick link to show you what I mean!

Valentine's Day: Our Valentine's Day class list is at the top of the blog for anyone who likes to get things done early:). Each child brings in a card for each classmate. I encourage your child to at least sign his/her name on the cards they are giving and it might be too much for them to do at once. Please note that we are NOT allowed to attach any candy to the Valentine. Please have Valentine cards in by 8:55 am on 2/14.

Nurse Philpot has asked that teachers share this information with our families:

If you are unable to pick one up, you may request to have the kit be put in your child’s backpack to be sent home by signing up at https://forms.gle/JLtV5tzxrtvQQ8o46. Please sign up Friday, 2/9.

You can also order 4 free tests from the state by clicking here. As always, COVID tests are also available for purchase at local pharmacies and retail stores.
