Jan. 29-Feb 2nd Bears and Groundhog Day

Hello!
I can't believe we will be in February by the end of this week and that we hit the half way point (day 90 was last week) of kindergarten! The children were super excited to meet Rhett, the "comfort dog" on Friday. The students that were a bit nervous at first were really brave and did end up patting the sweet dog. A HUGE thank you to our wonderful resource officer Meg Wodzinski for taking the time to introduce the class to the therapy dog in training and teach us a little about what Rhett does for his job.

We will continue our theme about Bears this week and the children will be writing a "report" about polar bears using some of our trick words including our new word, are. We will also learn a little about another hibernating animal, the groundhog, and make our own predictions on if the groundhog will see his shadow or not.

The students have been working hard at practicing number stories with numbers 0-10. We use bear manipulatives to act out the stories and then the students are writing the appropriate number sentence (add/sub). This week they will also be drawing their answers and telling me why they chose add/sub.

We have a lot of fun events coming up in the next few weeks!

Coming up-
Report Cards: will be available after school on Monday 1/29. Please remember that our K report card reflects end of the year standards/benchmarks and we have a lot of learning to do before the expected benchmarks are met!

Shaker Lane Spirit Day: Feb 1st- bring your favorite book to school!

Shakey's Storytime: Feb 1st in the evening (watch for Mrs. Kane's email for the link to the virtual storytime on Thursday). There will be 4 different "rooms" with teachers reading stories at different times and you can choose which stories to go to!

The 100th day of school: Feb. 6th is the 100th day of school and we will be celebrating with lots of fun activities that day.  The children are encouraged to bring in 100 of something to share with the class (like a show and tell).  This could be a collection (buttons, rocks, beads, Legos, ANYTHING!) or they could wear 100 on them (100 cheerios on a necklace, 100 smiley faces on a t- shirt, or just the number 100 on a hat etc).  This should not be a stressful thing! I will read a book as we get closer about the 100th day of school coming up, which has lots of ideas and we will discuss some ideas together. I have begun to talk about it with the class so they may be aware of the expectation.  We will also have a special snack on this day!

Global Play Day: Is on Feb 7th. HERE is a lot of information on what this day is exactly! So, the students are encouraged to bring in collaborative toys, games etc to share and play with their friends. I am asking that there be NO electronic/noisy games or toys. I appreciate it! Some fun things to bring in could be a large sheet/blanket to make a fort, craft materials, board games, card games, etc.. The whole school will be participating in this day of play!

Valentine's Day: Our Valentine's Day class list is at the top of the blog for anyone who likes to get things done early:). Each child brings in a card for each classmate. I encourage your child to at least sign his/her name on the cards they are giving and it might be too much for them to do at once. Please note that we are NOT allowed to attach any candy to the Valentine. Please have Valentine's in by 8:55 am on 2/14.
