May 11-15th 2026 OCEANS week 2!

 Hello Families,

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms of room 103!

The students were so engaged in their STEM challenge and they began the planning stage. Next week, they will do their building!

DON'T FORGET: OUR K CONCERT IS FRIDAY 5/15 @ 9:30!
You will want to get there a little early to get a good seat (it was standing room last year!). Once we start our rehearsals on the stage, I will email you to let you know where our class will be so you can get the best views!

We finished our Wit and Wisdom 7 Continents theme this week with a big project and will be all immersed in all things ocean! Next week is a full week of school.

In language arts, the children will:

  • write more complex sentences using trick words and digraphs
  • practice reading real/nonsense words with digraphs
  • sequence a story with main events
  • learn the new trick words: by, do, one
  • practice differentiating between vowel sounds to make and manipulate words
  • segment words with blends (this is very tricky for most of them!)
  • read and listen to many fiction and non fiction books about the ocean!
  • write facts about sea turtles and label the parts of one
In math, the children will:
  • measure and compare the length of a blue whale and a great white shark....and themselves!
  • review, review and more review of math facts through 10
  • solve number stories using ocean animals
  • demonstrate different ways to make 10
  • sequencing numbers 0-20
  • complete the unit 5 assessment on measurement and weight
Over the next few weeks in science, the children will:
  • learn and complete an experiment about why we float better in ocean water than lake water (due to the density of salty water vs lake)
  • compare what we learn about sharks, whales, seahorses, dolphins and octopuses
  • write a research paper on an ocean animal
In SEL, the children will:
continue to practice the skills our class needs to review such as waiting for turns, being aware of others around them and using whole body listening. We are also using "size of the problem" strategies to help with emotional regulation.

Here are pictures from last week:

Thank you to Locke's grandparents for being our Mystery Readers!

The students voted to have an extra recess with the playground all to themselves!

May 4-8th 2026

Hello,

We filled our heart jar again! The class will vote on a celebration on Monday and I will let you know what was decided. The classes have begun to rehearse for our big concert! I am super proud of how well our class is learning the songs...you won't want to miss it!

This week, we will begin our new theme. We will be learning about the ocean habitat! This topic will be integrated into all our subjects.

PLEASE check the important dates link:)

This week:

Monday- part 1 of our STEM challenge at the Imagatorium!

Thursday, May 7- PICTURE THIS school spirit day: kindergarten wears the color GREEN!

The children will...

Language Arts-

  • continue to write simple sentences using trick words and digraphs
  • practice reading real/nonsense words with digraphs
  • sequence a story with main events
  • learn the new trick words: from, they, of
  • practice differentiating between vowel sounds to make and manipulate words
  • segment words with blends (this is very tricky for most of them!)
  • read and listen to many fiction and non fiction books about the ocean!
  • complete our Wit and Wisdom arc on North America and begin the end of the module BIG task!
Math-
  • compare/contrast height and length
  • compare and contrast the weight of 2 objects
  • describe more than one attribute of objects
  • practice making number sentences (both add and sub)
  • demonstrate different ways to make 10
  • sequencing numbers 0-20
  • solving number stories using ocean animals

Science-
The children will explore the Ocean habitat in the next 3 weeks. They will observe different shells and the animals that live in the different oceans. They will learn there are 5 different oceans. This week's focus will be about ocean animals. The students will begin the Spring STEM challenge at the Imagatorium as well. This will be a fun 2 part project...I will get lots of pictures to show you😍

Social Studies-
The children will learn there are 5 different oceans and where they are located on a globe and map. They will learn about the importance of oceans and why we need to take care of this amazing habitat! We are also finishing up our lessons about North America.

Due to the many changes in family dynamics, most teachers have decided not to do a "Mother's Day or Father's Day" project but instead I will offer some choices for the students during choice time. There is a "Global Day of Parents" on June 1st that celebrates all parents/caretakers and we have decided to focus on that day so as not to make any students feel left out.

I did not get many pictures this past week but, here are a few!

Thank you to Mr. Doyon for being our
Mystery Reader!💖

April 27-May 1 2026

 Hello Families!

I hope you had a great April break. I spent a lot of time with Ellie, saw some dear friends, spent time with my parents and rode my "new friend" Tristian:

Hold on to your hats because the rest of the school year FLIES by so quickly! Please remember to check the Important K Events for dates and fun days!
it is going to go SO fast :(

We will wrap up our theme on the rainforest this week. The children will be completing an activity that shows the layers of the rainforest and which animals live where. When you are at Shaker Lane, check out our bulletin board! Although we are focusing on the Amazon rainforest, our bulletin board represents animals from rainforests around the world.

If you get the chance on Sunday or Monday morning, please review one thing that your child did over the vacation to share with their classmates. This will make it easier for your child to remember and write about their activity. It does not have to be anything grand!

This week the children will:
Language Arts-
  • write about their vacation week
  • continue to learn about Australia and South America during Wit and Wisdom and write about our favorite animals with supporting details
  • begin our arc on North America
  • use digraphs to spell words and read and write simple sentences
  • see and hear fluency when reading
  • sequence a story
  • review all the trick words learned to date
  • listen to and discuss a non fiction book about the rainforest
Math-
  • review modules 17 and 18 (writing and making numbers 10-20)
  • practice adding/subtracting within 10
  • practice skip counting by 10s
  • practice counting to 100
Science-
  • Learn about the layers of the rainforest and the animals that live there
  • learn a little about Jane Goodall and other scientists who advocated for the wildlife in rainforests
Social Studies-
  • learn about the children who live in the Amazon rainforest and compare/contrast their life to that of the children of Littleton
  • use a globe and maps of the world to see where the rainforests are located
  • learn about the people and culture of Australia and South America and where they are located on a map

This week
  • Monday- LPS STEM challenge begins!
  • Friday-  is a half day

Here are a few pictures from the week before vacation!

layers of the rainforest, time to play day, using number lines, making and reading sentences with sight words and scenes from the BMX bike show!
