Wit and Wisdom Module 3 Texts

Hello Families,

We had a fun Farm Day celebration and the butter making was a success!

I am super excited for our next Wit and Wisdom module to begin on Tuesday: America, Then and Now! We will be learning about famous Americans like Ben Franklin and how things like school and transportation have changed.

In addition to beginning our new module, the children will be...

Language Arts:

  • learning to write uppercase letters
  • tapping and blending CVC words
  • using magnets to make words
  • practicing ABC order
  • writing sentences
  • sequencing a story
  • reviewing all the trick words
Math:
  • acting out and solving both addition and subtraction problems and telling me why they used addition/subtraction
  • sequencing numbers 0-20
  • practicing number writing

Second Step:
  • lesson 17: managing disappointment
Science Center:
  • compare temperature of snow/warm water
  • observe snowflakes up close
  • experiment with a large "ice balloon" and see what happens when you add salt to ice

Some important things to note:
  • The Scholastic Book order will be due on MONDAY Jan. 19. I will put the order in that evening. I am giving it an extra day:)
  • Report cards will be available Monday Feb. 2nd after 4:00 in ASPEN (kindergarten has 2 semesters, which is different from the other grades)
  • The 100th day of school is scheduled to be on Feb. 6th: HERE is information regarding the 100th day of school!
  • Our Valentine's Day class list is at the top of the blog for anyone who likes to get things done early:). Each child brings in a card for each classmate. I encourage your child to at least sign his/her name on the cards they are giving and it might be too much for them to do at once. Please note that we are NOT allowed to attach any candy to the Valentine. Please have Valentine's in by 8:55 am on 2/13.
  • Thank you for all the paper towels and Clorox wipes- It will be a huge help in keeping those germs at bay in room 103!

Jan. 12-16th 2025 LOTS of STORYTIME!

Hello Families!

We have a busy week ahead, full of stories!

*Shakey's virtual  Storytime will be on Monday evening. A packet was sent home on Friday to be enjoyed for the event! There will be 3 breakout rooms with staff from school reading throughout the evening. I will be in breakout room 3 at 6:30! HERE is the link to room 3. Mrs. Kane will send out the links as well.

*AND...WEDNESDAY! As part of a Shaker Lane teacher initiative to encourage reading and the library, I will be reading at the Littleton Public Library on Wednesday at 6:30. Students can come in PJs and feel free to bring a stuffy. No need to register- just come for a bedtime story!

*FARM DAY!
We are concluding module 2 in Wit and Wisdom and to celebrate our farm theme (and all the hard work the children have been doing!), kindergarten will have a "Farm Day" celebration on FRIDAY 1/16. Children are invited to wear anything farm related. For example: we have learned about many characters from our texts and they could dress in pink to represent one of the pigs or brown for the brown dog in The Little Red Hen, they could dress like a farmer or wear something with a picture of a farm animal on it. THIS IS NOT A HAVE TO!! We will be making puppets and retelling stories with the puppets, designing our own farms (with different mediums), performing our repeated language that they have been practicing. We will also make our own butter to use on bread to eat at snack- just like the Little Red Hen! The children will also share their narrative books that they will be writing throughout the week. Look for a lot of work to come home on Friday!๐Ÿ˜‚

If you have any small baby food size jars (with lids) that you do not want, we can use them for making butter on Friday!

*This week in language arts, the children will:
  • learn a new trick word: you
  • write a narrative farm theme story
  • formally learn how to write uppercase letters A-P
  • continue to practice tapping and blending CVC words
  • manipulate letters to spell cvc words
  • put letters in ABC order
  • sequence and retell a story
  • identify story elements like: characters, setting, problem, events, responses to the problems and resolution
*This week in math, the children will be completing an assessment, practicing counting with 1:1 and making number sentences. They will also be sequencing and writing numbers.

*On Friday, the students will also learn about Martin Luther King and write or draw a picture to show their "dream".

*Second Step: lesson #16 managing anger

*A Scholastic Book order form went home last week. If you would like to order from the website, the due date will be Jan. 18th.

*Wednesday is an early release day!

๐Ÿ‘Thank you to all that have sent in Clorox wipes/paper towels! We will go through lots and appreciate any donations! Any donations of boxes of tissues is also much appreciated...we are wiping out the supply ๐Ÿ˜‚.

January 5-9th 2026

Hello and Happy New Year!

I just wanted to extend my sincere gratitude for all the lovely holiday gifts, cards and well wishes. I appreciate all of them but the best part is watching your child give a gift and the excitement on their face when I opened/read the gift/card. The spirit of giving on a kindergartener's face is precious!๐Ÿ’–

Just a reminder that the students only need full snow clothes on Fridays. However, they do need warm mittens and hats. I have a mitten basket for those who forget theirs but the supply is dwindling (amazing how they just disappear:)! I will buy some more but would also welcome any donations (especially waterproof ones!). ๐Ÿ˜Š

This week:
Now that we have learned all the letters, we are going to begin our "themes". For the next 3 weeks, our theme will be "winter". We will read several fiction and non fiction books about the season and all our subjects will be integrated with the theme. We will also be learning about temperature and our 5 senses in the winter.  We will continue with our "farm theme" in Wit and Wisdom for the next few weeks.

Language arts focus:
The students will formally learn how to "tap and blend" sounds to make words. This important strategy will be essential for reading and writing. Here is a short video to show you what I mean!

The students will get a new sight word:  little
We will also begin to formally learn how to write the uppercase letters. The children have been doing a lot of writing and are learning things like finger spacing, adding a capital letter at the start of a sentence and adding punctuation at the end of a sentence. They are stretching and tapping words and really working hard at discriminating between vowel sounds...it's A LOT!! I am really proud of how hard they are working!๐Ÿ˜

Math focus:
  • compare 2 groups and tell which has more/less
  • demonstrate the concept of equal
  • use strategies like drawing lines to match objects to see which group has "left overs" or more and tell how many more
  • match numbers to quantity
  • sequence numbers
  • practice counting to 100 by 1s and 10s

Science focus: The students will learn about trees in winter and our 5 senses. They will also be categorizing winter/summer clothes.

Second Step Lesson: lesson #15 "Waiting is HARD!"

Thank you to Mrs. LaQuerre for
being our Mystery Reader!

Here are some pictures in video form from the week before the holiday break. It was so fun to see the magic through your child's eyes...precious!
