January 8-12 Winter Week 2

Hello and Happy Snowy Sunday!
Now that there is snow on the ground, the children will be required to have snow clothes to play on the playground. Kindergarten has "snow play" on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays during lunch recess only. So, if students are prepared, they can play in the snow on those days. The other days (Tues/Thurs), they will be on the hardtop and THERE IS NO NEED FOR SNOW CLOTHES. Your child will need: boots, snow pants, jacket and mittens/gloves or they will have to play on the hardtop regardless of the day. Again, you do not need to send in snow gear on Tues/Thurs or half day Wednesdays. Of course, if we get the rain they are predicting later this week, it will all melt and you do not need to send in snow clothes😂. You are welcome to send in a bag of snow gear to leave at school, too, if you want. If you prefer to do this, please send in a note to let us know or I will make sure your child brings the snow gear home each day.

We filled our heart jar! The children voted on a PJ and movie day. Looking ahead at the weather, I think Wednesday looks like a warmer day. It might be indoor recess anyways due to possible rain. So, Wednesday (1/10) we will have PJ day and watch the short movie The Snowy Day as a follow up to our activities based on the book. I will also pass out some popcorn during the movie. Wednesday is also a 1/2 day of school.

This week in language arts, the children will:
  • learn a new trick word: to
  • write about what they like to do on a snowy day
  • formally learn how to write uppercase letters A-H
  • continue to practice tapping and blending CVC words
  • manipulate letters to spell cvc words
  • put letters in ABC order
  • sequence a story
  • write and share a "true story" with a partner during Writer's Workshop
This week in math, the children will:
  • compare 2 groups and tell which has more/less
  • demonstrate the concept of equal
  • use strategies like drawing lines to match objects to see which group has "left overs" or more and tell how many more
  • match numbers to quantity
  • sequence numbers
  • practice counting to 100 by 1s and 10s
This week's Second Step lesson:
  • waiting is hard! #15
On Friday, the students will also learn about Martin Luther King and write or draw a picture to show their "dream".

In Science this week, the children will look carefully and observe snowflakes and be able to discuss the characteristics of winter.

Here are some pictures from last week.
