The Buzz in Room 103: March 4-8th DiNOSAURS!

Hello and Happy March,

It was so fun to see my past and current students at the virtual dance party last night! A huge thank you to the PTA for sponsoring the event. Speaking of the PTA, please consider volunteering at the Springfest event (April 26th). This is a HUGE Shaker Lane family (in person) event that is the biggest fundraiser for the PTA...and it is super fun!

This week, we will begin a 3 week long theme on dinosaurs! The theme will integrate all subjects. The children will be reading about, writing about (both fiction and non), sorting, classifying, measuring, comparing and estimating the size of dinosaurs. We will learn about fossils and the scientists who specialize in dinosaurs (paleontologists).

This week, the children will:

Language Arts-

continue to write "how to books"
write about a made up dinosaur
listen to a non fiction book about dinosaurs for background knowledge and then answer comprehension questions
open "dinosaur eggs" and arrange letter tiles in the egg to spell a word
determine if a CVC word is real or nonsense
learn when to use the letter c or k in a word
practice the new trick word: was
label the parts of a dinosaur
write/spell short vowel words that have been dictated to them

Math-

begin our unit on 3D shapes!
learn about a cube, sphere, cylinder and a cone
build a dinosaur using shapes
write number sentences to 5
prove that a number sentence equals 10
solve for the missing addend

Second Step Lesson #22- having fun with friends (how to compromise, etc)

Science-(throughout the next 3 weeks)

classifying dinosaurs by size and what they ate
compare/contrast attributes of dinosaurs
learn about fossils and make our own "fossil"
learn about what a paleontologist's job is really like

This week- please remember to send in a snack for your child EACH day equipped with the necessary utensils 😄

Monday- we will begin our "March Madness" read alouds and vote for our favorite "March Madness" book! Thank you to all who purchased books for the kindergarten classes!
Wednesday- 12:15 early release day
THURSDAY is Shaker Lane school spirit day- RAINBOW DAY (dress in rainbow colors)
